Inspiration - Coldplay

In Coldplay's Paradise video they have an elephant which holds up pieces of cardboard with the words; 'Para' and 'Paradise' whilst Chris Martin sings. We liked this idea of the cardboard being held whilst the band sings over the top of it.

I edited these images in photoshop by print screening from youtube and then cropping them down so that i could look at the images individually and see how they have wrote the text onto the cardboard so we could see whether it was normally written or bubble writing.

Emailing The Record Company & The Band

It was essential that we emailed the band and their record company because we didn't want to get in trouble for copywright of the song so we emailed to ask for their permission.

The Beach Boys Website

This is the top half of my website. I made sure that i had each band member have an individual picture so that you can see the band members and also so that if fans look at this page they are able to click on each band members link and look at their profiles. Underneath each image i had a 'Wouldn't it be nice' quote as this is the song we did the promo video to.

This is my finished website for The Beach Boys. I stuck to a black and white theme for this as the pictures of the boys were in suits so it made them look professional and sophisticated. In the middle section I had quotes from celebrities, radio stations and newspapers. At the bottom of my website i have listed the bands tour destinations which shows the countries that they will going to so this makes their fan base more aware of where the band is going to be touring in throughout the year.

Website images & Actors

The actors that we are going to use is Ricky, Maxwell and Sam. The reason we chose to use them is because I was in group with Max and Ricky already so we knew what kind of image we wanted to create. We had Sam as the third band member as he is in our media group and we knew that we would be able to use him at any time. This meant that as we were altogether we were able to sort out filming times as we were able to ask when were all free.

These three images are what I am going to be using for my website for The Beach Boys. I needed them to be looking in different directions as they were having single photos as on the website they will have their own individual about me.

This is the homepage for my website and as you can see from the image there are 3 sections where i have also put their names underneath so you can see whereabouts their photos will go. I did 3 individual images so that their fans reading can see who is in the band, their names and are able to click on their pages to find out more. I also did the images singly because when scrolling down the website there is a photo gallery where there will be various photo's of the band altogether.

The Band

As a group we decided what pictures we definitely needed and these would be what we were going to be useing for our digipak and for the website. I took multiple pictures of them just to ensure that we got the right shot and we were all happy with the selected one.

These are images of the boys being 'The Beach Boys'.
They were all smartly dressed as they were smartly dressed when they were filmed in the 'Wouldn't it be nice video'.
This is my favourite image of them as they are all smiling and looks more appealing to the their consumers than the image above. However this image will need to be edited using different colour tones so that it looks less simple and boring.
We zoomed in on the image to see what it would look like in medium-close up and it did look a lot better zoomed in however i will need to crop this image and adjust it slightly so it looks more professional. This will be the image that I think I will use in my digipak in the inside page.

We took pictures over a few days so that we got the band in different outfits and we were running out of creative ideas so taking pictures on different days allowed us to think of what photos we wanted for our ancillary tasks.

Other videos of our band

'I get around'
This video focuses on the band in a concert. The camera angles that they use are a lot of close ups especially when a different band member sings their individual line to a song or verse. At the beginning of the song they have an establishing shot of where the band are going to be performing this includes when a band member has a solo on the particular instrument that they are playing. The Beach Boys all wear the same outfits as well and in this video they worse vertically striped shirts and trousers. Some band members were playing instruments which we need to consider if we want our band to have musical instruments or to all simply sing. The camera always zooms out so that it has a wide shot of the band altogether. As a group we liked the fact they had a band at a concert singing altogeter and this is something we want to consider for our music video.

'Wouldn't it be nice'
At the beginning of the video it has the band in a wide and long shot of the band dancing so that it is all at the same time. The lyrics 'Wouldn't it be nice if we were older' it shows that they want to grow up but still act like children by all dancing together. The lyrics seem more about a love story but the band are all having fun by walking into the pool with a dingy above their head and then all jumping onto it. The song changes at the fourth verse where it shots them on a stage singing showing wide ange shots where it fits the whole band in and also has the same close ups on the individual band members that are singing their own lines.

'California Dream'
The video of california dreamin is different to the above videos as this tells a story where the others are mainly the band singing on stage. I liked the effects that this video has used such as the bands faces being faded in and infront of the buildings. The camera angles are used by panning the sky and the tops of the building. I didnt like the music video for this song as i didnt feel like it fit with the lyrics.

Deciding our images

As a group we had brainstormed what picture ideas we would want for both the website and the digipak. Some of the images we will all be using but will be using them all differently.

Digi Pak Images

Here are some images that we have saved from family holidays and days out. I narrowed my choices down as there were so many photos we had. I wanted the second image as i thought i would be able to write the band name in the sea however i am not that skilled on photoshop so most likely wouldnt be able to do this. The third image i thought would be good for a beach scene as i would be able to write the band name in the sky and as it is completely clear unlike the second image the name would stand out even more.

Looking at The Beach Boys Albums

These are some of The Beach Boys CD covers that i looked at to get inspiration for when designing my own digipak. From the images above, they are all beach related which links to the bands name, not one of these has an image of the band. They also use warm colours such as yellow and orange to show that the beach is hot the images are also sometimes sunset related.

Looking at these album covers made me think what the front cover of digipak should look like. To have an album cover with a sunset or a beach i will need to taken it myself which is easy for me as i can look through images that i have taken on holidays in order to get an album cover like this. It will need to be sunny with no objects in the background which would make it look unprofessional.

Looking at other bands

After we had decided that we were going to use The Beach Boys - Wouldn't it be nice as our music video we wanted to look at other recent, well known and popular bands for inspiration.  We firstly looked at Westlife as they are extremely successful.

This is an image of Westlife performing at the O2. From this image we can see that they are all in the same type of clothing just different styles which shows their individuality.
This image helped us for when we were planning for filming as we wanted to have the band singing like they were on tour and were in an arena singing.

Take That is another band that we looked at as they are all smartly dressed and this is the look that we wanted for Sam, Maxwell and Ricky. Although Take That are in the same clothing we liked the look of Westlife having their own individuality so that fans can relate to them.

Health and Safety

When filming for our music video i needed to ensure that we stuck to health and safety as i needed to make sure that nobody got hurt whislt we were filming

- Making sure that everyone stayed safe

- If we were to use the tripod we needed to ensure that where we had set it up was away from everyone and wasnt an obstruction to anyone.

- As we were going to be travelling on the underground we made sure that the filming equipment was in a bag so that it didn't get damaged and was safe.

- Another reason we stuck to health and safety was by sticking together when we were travelling to London as we were travelling in busy times as it was during half term so we had to make sure that we were always together.

Costumes for band, actor and actress

This is my outfit that I wore for the girl in the music video. As it was late October I decided that i would wear a red rain jacket so that if the weather was to change I would be prepared and if we were to film in the rain I would look like I was dressed right for the weather.

This is the clothes that Ricky wore as the actor in our music video. We were similarly dresses as we both had jeans on and Ricky was also wearing a coat just incase the weather was to change then if we were to carry on filming it would still look we were dressed for the weather.

This is the clothing Maxwell wore for the band scenes. We wanted the band smartly dressed as this way the band looks sophisticated which is the look that we wanted to go for as we looked at other bands such as Take That.

Day of filming

On the day we intended to film in London I met Maxwell and Ricky in town at half 9 on the first day of half term, I thought it was going to be relatively busy this day but it wasn't as bad as we had all expected. We needed to go in the half term as there wouldn't have been any other time that we would be able to go to London to film. We left this early to ensure that we had a full day filming and this meant we were able to take our time when deciding what locations to use in order for our media video to look the best. The weather stayed dry all morning and afternoon which was beneficial as we had a lot of outdoor scenes to film. However, when we were heading home it had started to rain which was lucky as we had filmed what we needed to that day and our camera had ran out of battery.

As the batteries ran out on the cameras quickly we needed to ensure that we kept turning it off whilst we decided whre we needed to go next. If we hadn't of done this we wouldn't have been able to get the filming we needed done and would've had to return to London Zoo. Luckily, we got done what we needed to on the day that we had scheduled to film.

In the afternoon we went to Regents Park to film the bike scenes. Maxwell had difficulty filming Ricky and I on the bikes as he had to ride a bike himself whilst filming. Some of our clips are quite shakey due to the pavement being bumpy which made having a steady hand difficult for Maxwell. However once we had watched back the clip after he had filmed us riding the bikes, we realised and then went to a different area of the park where the pavements were smoother.

We were unable to take any photos for our ancillary tasks on this day as we wanted 3 members for our band and we didn't have Sam with us the day that we went to London. Another reason we didn't film on this day is because we wanted it to look like it was being filmed at a concert so the best place to do this would be the school hall where we could take photos at different angles and had an unlimited amount of time to do this as we could access it when we wanted to.

Bike Hire

These are our receipts from our 'Barclays Cycle Hire'. It was £1.00 to rent these and there was no added charge if you had them for under 30 minutes. We only needed the bikes for a short amount of time so we didnt have to pay an extra fee. These bikes weren't allowed to be rode on pavements which meant that when we took the bikes we had to use the cycle lane which was scary on london roads.
These weren't the bikes that we orginally planned to use as there were meant to be bike hire in Regents Park but we were unable to find this and the member of staff thought we meant the Barclays bikes as well. We then had to walk to Baker Street as this was the closest Barclays Cycle Hire.

London Zoo

These are a ticket and the receipt to show that myself, ricky lawrence and maxwell mbofana went to London Zoo together. I felt that today we got a lot of filming done as we were able to use different areas in the zoo to show that it was a day out between me and ricky who are the couple in our film.

When in the zoo we came across a lot of these guides to help us get around the zoo. As this was our first time to the zoo these were very useful for us to get around easily. On the map it also has a red circle on a certain part of the zoo. This is to show where you are in the zoo to help you to decide where you need to go and what is close to you.

Locations

Here are some of the locations that we used for our music video. As through our music video we were constantly moving, especially when we were riding the bikes through regents park so I only photographer some of the areas as we would need to film it as we rode to numerous locations.

Regent's Park Map

As the zoo is based in Regents Park we had to use the map as we entered Regents Park so that we were able to head in the right direction to the zoo. It was very useful and we found where we needed to go near enough straight away. We also had to use the map later on when we wanted to find out about the bike and padlow hire. However when we were looking for the bike hire the website it was in a different place to where it actually was so we had to ask a member of staff so that we knew where we were going. There are also numbers on the map so that you can call up the place on the map. We was going to ring up to find if the padlows were available but as we had the bikes we rode over and found out. This helped us to decide against them as they were too expensive.

London Underground

This is one our train tickets for today. We got a travel card so that we were able to go anywhere in London but we only needed to go to one place but the option was there if we needed it.

Weather Desicions

As we were going to the zoo on monday we needed to know what the weather was going to be like so that we were able to plan what we would wear so that we were prepared. As you can see in the image to the left the weather from 11:00 till 15:00 was meant to be cloudy however when at the zoo it was drizzling slightly. But we all had coats just in case so we were prepared for this.

We were quite lucky when we decided that we wanted to film at London Zoo on Monday as the weather from tuesday to friday was awful. The only other day that would have been good to film on is Saturday however, it was too late for me to get the day off work and as it was a saturday and during half term it would be packed.

Storyboards

These are my storyboards where we planned out as a group what shots we need to do and in what order. On the day however, we thought of other ideas that we could put into our music video and shortened some clips so that our new ideas could fit in. I also listed out how many seconds each clip would be filmed so that i knew that it would all fit in with the song. I also listed what camera angles i would be using so that on the day we would be prepared and didnt have to waste time on what we needed to film.

Location Ideas

Once we had decided what song we would be doing for our music video we needed to decide where would go to film for our music video. As a group we looked at other Beach Boys videos but the settings that they used were near enough all on the beach. To be slightly different to them, and once we had throghouly read through the lyrics we realised that we would be able to base it on a young couple. We brainstormed ideas together as a group and this is what we came up with
Paris
We thought about going to Paris for a day trip as this is romantic place for couples to go and would be easy for us to show a relationship as their are many sights. However this would be very costly for us as we would need to pay for flights there and back as none of us drive to be able to travel there on the Eurostar. Another reason we didnt choose Paris is because we would need to know where we were going to be able to get all of the filming done in a short space of time as we wouldnt be able to return.

Thorpe Park
Although this would be easy for us to access as we could get the train there we wouldnt be able to do much filming apart from queuing for rides and we didnt think this was the best way to show a couple. Again Thorpe Park is quite faraway from Harlow so this would mean we would need to be there for the opening and there till the closing of the park so that we get as much filming done as possible.

Regents Park - Bike Ride - Field
Depending on the weather will determine whether we go for a bike ride or not. When researching we saw that in the Park there is a bike hire so we would be able to go and hire the bikes after we had been around the zoo. However as a back up plan we decided that if we couldnt find the bike hire then we would go to the Barclays bike hire and rent the bikes through that as couples on a bike ride would be seen as 'cute' and 'romantic'. We also needed a field that we could film in, we had many options that we could use to do this but as we thought Regents Park would be good as the Park would be massive and we didnt want anyone in the background so we knew that we would be able to film without any interference of other people.

Pets Corner - Harlow
Although Pets Corner is easy for us to access and we would be able to return there whenever we needed to. However, Pets Corner looks slightly dated and is a lot smaller compared to the other zoo's that we have looked at, so we wouldnt be able to take a lot of clips if we decided to film there. Another reason that we didn't use Pets Corner to film was because there isn't a lot there and as we wanted different sceneries to film our clips in.

The Beach
As the song is called 'Wouldn't it be nice' by The Beach Boys we did consider doing some of our filming at a beach which would have to be Southend as that is the closest one to us and is the most accessible. But because we are going to be filming in the half term next week and its october the weather isn't really what we need for a beach scene. There isn't much we could do to film on a beach as we wouldnt be able to look like like it was summer in trunks and bikini's as it would be way too cold for this.

Boat trip
Although a boat trip would be nice to do we dont have a boat that we could use and dont know anyone who has one so this has proved impossible for us. If we asked to hire one we would need to find a driver who would be able to drive us all day until we had completed our filming and we would also need to pay the driver and for the hire of the boat and we don't have the kind of money to be able to do this.

London Zoo
Although we would need to travel to London for this, we found that London Zoo was one of the easiest locations that we could access as we could travel up on the trains early. Another reason we thought of London Zoo for one of our locations to film was because we had looked at prices of the tickets to get in the Zoo and they seemed reasonable as we would be in there the majority of the day filming. Another reason we thought London Zoo would be good for us would be because there are a lot of locations in the zoo that we would be able to use for different scenes of our music video.

After discussing the locations we decided that London Zoo and Regents Park would be best to show what we want in our music video. But on the day we will need to ensure that we get the job done as we won't be able to return if and when we want to.

The band

The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and their friend Al Jardine. The band was managed by the Wilson brothers' father, Murry.
The group has had 36 United States Top 40 hits, which is the most by an American rock band.  56 hot 100 hits, including for number-one singles. In 2004 they were also listed as 12th in the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'.

Research on Genre

When researching about The Beach Boys we found out their genre is 'pop rock'. The group started creating their music during the early 60's and are also classed as a surf band, explaining the name The Beach Boys.
Pop rock is a mix of the conventions of popular music, light lyrical and catchy rhythms with a high concentraion of guitar usage simular to convential rock. Examples of modern Pop Rock bands include:
Maroon 5
Scouting for Girls
Before these bands there were bands like The Beach Boys and the Cranberries.

Deciding on our band

When deciding on what band we wanted to do, we knew that we wanted an all boy band so we listed boy bands that were more than 10 years old and also recent ones so that we could compare them. Underneath each artist we wrote down 3 of their songs.

Five
- Keep on movin
- If ya getting down baby
- When the lights go out

Westlife
- Uptown girl
- You raise me up
- Flying without wings

One Direction
- What makes you beautiful
- One thing
- Little things

The Monkees
- Hey hey we're the monkees
- I'm a believer
- Sleepy Jean

The Beatles
- Hey Jude
- Yellow Submarine
- Twist and Shout

Backstreet boys
- I want it that way
- As long as you love me
- Ill never break your heart

Decision

This is Ricky Lawrence, myself and Maxwell Mbofana in media was taken by our teacher as we had just finalised that we would now be doing a music video.
The options were between:
A promotion package for the release of an album to include a music promo video together with:
- A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
- Promotional webpage on the artist

A promotion package for a new film to include a teaser trailer together with:
- A film magazine front cover, featuring the film
- A poster for the film .

As we decided to create a music video we were told that we were only able to have a song that was ten or more years older or a song that hadn't been released as a single. We struggled with this as there are too many songs that we could choose from and we also needed a song that we would be able to create a music video to that would be relative to the lyrics.
In order for our video to be successful we were briefed to complete this checklist:

Planning
Research
Digipak
Poster
Costume and Make-up
Props
Lighting
Time management
Space
Organisation
Good Lipsyncing
Large variety of shots
Good use of editing
Good blog
A interesting and believable performance
A interesting setting

The Brief

The brief we were asked to do was to create either a music video or a film trailer and we decided to do a film trailer for a ted swede as we thought it would be easy to do and as it was meant to look badly however it was hard to think of short different scenes.

This was our finished ted sweed and although it wasn't meant to look perfect there was a lot of things that I learnt from doing this. We should have planned it out more as there were scenes that we needed to change as we weren't able to do it such as ted playing football. We also left it late to film as well as on the hand in day we were still adding film clips we were doing that day.
Our editing wasn't as good as it could be because we didn't have a lot of time and still struggled to use imovie.
As finishing the video was very last minute we had to quickly decide some songs to put in the background as its a trailer. The songs we chose don't necessarily match what the trailer is about so we decided to have something upbeat, 'Calvin Harris - I feel so close to you'. We also used the introduction to 'Ne-yo - So sick' as the music is very soft and this is where he was saying that Ted had to leave. Another song that matched what was going on in the trailer is where Ted is on his own and we chose to have 'Celine Dion - All by myself' playing in the background

From doing this task we realised that it would be a lot harder to create a film trailer for a film that we would need to make up ourselves. But without getting ideas from other films it would be hard for us to make up without it looking like another film trailer.

This helped us to decide that we would rather make a music video as we would have lyrics to work with and this would then be easier for us to create a video around lyrics. We also evaluated other groups videos and saw that their music videos were a lot better than ours were.

Friends Video

For the friends task we were all given the same script which we had to learn so that when we were being filmed you wouldn't see us reading off the paper. We needed to get into groups so that there were enough characters in order to have the conversation. My group consisted of myself, Bradley Stokes, Ricky Lawrence, Darren Cousins and Jack Halliday. We allocated ourselves characters and as we had an extra person we had Jack film us.

This our final friends video:

Lip Syncing

Todays lesson we looked at what we were going to perform as part of our lip syncing video. My group for this was the same and I stayed with Sam and Claire as we worked well together. We were undecisive on what songs to choose and came up with a variety that we thought would be easy for us to lip sync but we also needed to consider what song would be the easiest to do actions to as well.

The songs that we thought to use were:
- American Boy - Kanye West ft Estelle
- Spice Girls - 2 become 1
- Killers - Mr.Brightside

We decided on American Boy as it is a popular song so the three of us didn't have to completely learn a new song and as in the music video there is Kanye West we thought Sam could play him. The reason why we didnt choose to use the Spice Girls to lip sync is because only myself and Claire knew the song properly and Sam didnt want to sing a girl band song. This was the same when we looked at the Killers as its an all boy band so me and Claire wouldn't be able to sing it as we didnt think it would look right.

Editing The Phone Call

In this lesson we took our clips that we filmed on fridays media lesson and uploaded them on the iMac and began editing. We ordered the clips and then watched them through so that we knew if they were going to be usable or not. This also enabled us to edit and cut things out that didn't need to be there and adjust the sound if some areas were too quiet where the surrounding sounds had gone over the top. After editing our clips we needed to add in transitions so that our short film flowed easily and as there was a variety of transitions to choose from we were able to see what ones look best for our film.

The Phone Call

This lesson we have been put into groups and I am with Sam and Claire to do the filming task for 'The phone call'. Claire filmed Sam and I having a phone call. Each member of the group were given a task sheet which listed what shots we needed to when depending on scenaries using a shot list. We were given a basic task sheet that said what we needed to include and what shots we needed to use but we had to choose whether it was going to be a cheerful phonecall or serious.
This was our video of the phonecall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wliKxxt2YDU&list=UUzCuzU6TJVKZ_Khku1FndtQ&index=23

This task meant that we were able to experiment with the video camera and gain camera skills which we can use next year. I found this task useful as i get to get used to the camera and helped me to get more familiar with the camera angles and shots. When filming we needed to check our surroundings in case it was going to be too noisy for what we was going to do.

Digital Driving Test

In this mornings lesson we were given a sheet called 'digital driving test' which explained and helped us to set up a tripod, use the camera, put down the tripod and put the clip we took onto the iMac and then upload our movie onto iMovie. Once we had put the clip onto the laptop we had to play the clip we had and then edit the faulty parts. Between each clip we were also expected to add in transitions so that our video flowed more, looked more professional and didn't jump from scene to scene. After the editing process was completed we then had to upload it to YouTube.
As none of our group had used the tripod or iMac before apart from Jack we learnt a lot and i know this will help me next year when editing my music video.
